Biome route

Swamp progression guide

Iron, poison resistance, crypts, turnips, and Bonemass prep.

Field note

What to do next

Do not enter the Swamp casually. Bring poison resistance mead, portal materials, a mace plan, and enough food to survive wet stamina pressure.

Read this as the minimum safe loop: enter prepared, secure the resource, solve the main hazard, then clear the Bonemass gate.

First safe Swamp run

Your first Swamp trip should be a scouting loop, not a mining marathon. Land on Meadows or Black Forest ground beside the biome, place a portal outside poison and archer range, then walk the edge until you confirm crypts, turnip seeds, and a safe retreat line.

  • +Drink poison resistance before you are already poisoned; it is prevention, not a panic button.
  • +Keep the rested buff active because the wet effect punishes stamina during every fight and retreat.
  • +Mark crypts, surtling spawners, turnip seed spots, and safer shoreline exits on the map.

Portal and crypt loop

A good Swamp loop uses the portal for repair, food, meads, and corpse recovery while the ship handles metal. Clear the entrance room of each crypt first so it becomes a temporary shelter, then mine muddy scrap piles in controlled chunks instead of opening every doorway at once.

  • +Store non-metal loot through the portal and leave scrap iron near the coast for the next ship run.
  • +Use half-mined muddy scrap piles as cover when draugr or blobs wait on the other side.
  • +Leave the biome before night if the portal area is not fully safe.

Iron priority

Iron is still useful long after the Swamp, so the goal is not just one weapon. For progression, build the pieces that reduce immediate risk before spending heavily on comfort crafts.

  • +Craft iron mace first if Bonemass is the next target.
  • +Upgrade shield and armor enough to survive draugr archers without draining the whole iron stockpile.
  • +Save extra iron for stonecutter access, later crafting, and backup weapons.

When to leave for Bonemass

Leave the farming loop when the boss attempt has a complete recovery plan, not just when you have ten Withered bones. Bonemass punishes missing preparation more than low damage numbers.

  • +Iron mace, poison resistance, strong Swamp food, healing mead, and a repaired shield are the baseline.
  • +Flatten the arena with a hoe and remove nearby spawners or enemy pockets before summoning.
  • +Build a portal close enough for recovery but far enough that the boss cannot destroy it during the fight.

Before entering

  • +Poison resistance mead ready.
  • +Rested buff active.
  • +Portal materials carried.
  • +Blunt weapon plan.
  • +Enough arrows for leeches and draugr at range.

First objectives

  • +Use the Swamp Key to open sunken crypts.
  • +Mine scrap iron and ship it home.
