How to Prepare for the Swamp
The practical checklist to survive poison, wet stamina, draugr, crypts, and Bonemass prep.
Field note
Direct answer
Prepare for Swamp with poison resistance mead, rested buff, portal materials, upgraded food, and a blunt weapon plan.

Route card
Fast path before details
Upgrade cauldron food before long swamp runs.
Carry portal materials and place the portal outside the biome.
Use crypts as temporary safe rooms when overwhelmed.
Prioritize iron mace before Bonemass.
Minimum carry-in kit
Swamp preparation is not about perfect gear. It is about carrying the few items that prevent the biome from chaining one mistake into three more mistakes.
- +Poison resistance mead, portal materials, rested buff, cooked food, and a repaired bow should be ready before entry.
- +Carry enough wood or supplies to make basic cover near the portal if the shoreline is noisy.
- +Bring a hoe if you expect to clean waterlogged paths or prep Bonemass later.
Food and mead baseline
The wet effect makes stamina worse across the whole biome, so food quality matters even when enemies are not hitting hard. The safer baseline is one health-heavy food, one stamina or balanced food, and one reliable cooked option you can replace.
- +Use poison resistance before poison lands; drinking after the hit does not undo the bad decision.
- +Keep healing mead for mistakes, not as a substitute for better food and spacing.
- +Refresh food before entering a crypt or crossing deep water, not after the fight starts.
Combat rules that save runs
Swamp enemies punish panic movement. Most clean runs come from pulling fewer enemies, using line of sight, and refusing fights that start in water or with no stamina.
- +Shoot leeches and draugr from safer ground instead of jumping into water to finish them.
- +Back out of blob poison clouds and wait; do not trade hits because the enemy looks low.
- +Use crypt doors, trees, and terrain to split enemies before committing to melee.
When to abort the trip
A good player leaves before the run collapses. If rested buff is gone, poison resistance is running out, or the portal side is under pressure, bank the progress and come back with a reset.
- +Leave when inventory is heavy enough that you cannot sprint out of a bad pull.
- +Stop mining if the portal path is no longer safe; recovery access matters more than one more scrap pile.
- +Sleep, repair, restock meads, and restart in daylight instead of forcing a night swamp run.
What do I need before entering the Swamp in Valheim?
Poison Resistance Mead is the non-negotiable requirement. You also need rested buff, portal materials, a blunt weapon (for skeletons and slimes), and food upgraded beyond Meadows-tier. Bronze or Troll gear is the minimum defense floor.
How many Poison Resistance Meads should I bring?
At least four per long crypt run — one to enter, one mid-run, and two for recovery situations. Brew extras at the Fermenter so you never enter a crypt without a full stack. Running out mid-crypt turns an iron run into a corpse run.
